Volunteers Are Key

Well, the 2014 Seaview Manor Bazaar is over! We worked incredibly hard over the course of about 10 days, all volunteer hours.

Carolyn Anderson came from Washington for the 7th year to help the vendors set up and manage the finances. There were hundreds of transactions during the two days, and making sure the vendors receive the correct amount of money takes a lot of checking and double checking. But Carolyn made sure we balanced.

Lenore Hemphill came from Las Vegas for 10 days to help! She managed the check out station, worked with Carolyn on the finances, and helped in multiple other ways to set up and clean up. I can't sing her praises enough!

Coral Natta came from Portland to manage the kitchen. She made sure food and drinks were out for our Thursday evening party and pre-sale, weekend soups and sandwich fixings were available, and the kitchen was kept neat and clean. Another volunteer position I couldn't do without.

Alan Seidenfeld helped in more ways than I can count. He started each day with a "honey-do list" that included everything from "change light bulbs" to "put out highway signs and banner."

Then we had the volunteers from The Harbor. This year there were six who did an incredible job as cashiers or sales slip managers: Chris, Ella, Josh, Kris, Laurie, and Linda. Thanks to them for all their hard work!

We put our vendors to work too. They wrapped, greeted, provided security, sold, answered questions, and brought food.

We will be able to make a donation of about $1100 to The Harbor. So, was it worth it? That's the big question. Let me know what you think.

More Artists

We have even more vendors, but few photos. It's good to have a few surprises.

Carol Allen:  Sometimes we just can't resist having available handmade items from around the world. Carol traveled to Prague recently and brought back beautiful handmade glass pieces that she is willing to share. For those who love to travel, shopping for beautiful and unusual things is part of the fun. And the rest of us get to travel vicariously by hearing the story and taking home one of these treasures.

Kathy Page and Lynn Wiley: Kathy and Lynn work together to create one-of-a-kind holiday decorations, which usually make use of some kind of lights and are always beautiful.

Jennifer McSheridan: I saw Jennifer at an art show in Puyallup, WA, and invited her to participate in the Seaview Manor Bazaar. That was 7 years ago and she keeps coming back. I love Jennifer...and her work!

Mary Schlunegger: Mary adds a new dimension to the bazaar with precious embellished baby and children's clothing and headbands. My granddaughter wears her flowered headband with anything!

Jobina Lacock: Jobina comes from Forest Grove and is new to us this year. She makes purses, aprons, and other textile creations.

Charlotte Bruhn, Richard Hazelton and Diane Jackson are artists from Astoria, OR. Charlotte and Diane run Luminary Arts in Astoria. I have a hard time getting out of there without buying something!

Diane Coorengel makes lovely cards and is donating her entire sales to the Clatsop County Women's Resource Center, now called The Harbor.

Alan Seidenfeld, Resin Artist

Even though I have already featured Alan Seidenfeld from Portland, Oregon, in this blog, I just have to show you some of his most recent jewelry creations.

A collar is just the thing for those people who have difficulty with clasps.  No hooks involved! And it's so lightweight you won't even know it's there.

A free-form cluster of color makes a unique pendant. No one else will have anything like it.

This variety of colorful 1-inch cuff bracelets just calls for several of them on your arm. You'll have fun selecting the perfect combination.

Some people prefer to make a statement with just one large cuff bracelet. Aren't the colors gorgeous?

Shannon Hennrich, Confectioner

We have a few food items that make perfect holiday gifts.

Shannon Hennrich will be back with her mouth-watering peanut brittle, though I can't figure out how she will find time to do that while holding down her full-time teaching job in Beaverton, Oregon. She holds a doctorate in special education with a special interest in those students with ADHD.

My sister Billi will have her macadamia nut shortbread cookies that have been proclaimed by experts to be the best they have ever tasted!

I will have the almond toffee that has sold out every year.

Carol Allen will have homemade dog bones and catnip for our four-legged friends.

Leanne Fernald, Confectioner

So I have to tell you about my latest experimentation.

I make the almond toffee - like 30 pounds of it.

I have lots of crumbs left over when I break it into pieces.

I hate to throw all those crumbs away.

Idea: Why don't I use toffee crumbs in oatmeal cookies?

Mistake: read "vegetable shortening" as "vegetable oil".

The cookies turned out to be wonderful, crispy oatmeal cookies with toffee chunks, chocolate, and walnuts (the left overs from the candy.)

Tiny little cookies take hours to make, but they're great and are just the right size!

Now I'm in the business of making tiny little oatmeal "bites".

Combine a day at the ocean with a visit to the Seaview Manor Bazaar in Seaside, OR, October 24 and 25, 2014.

Suzanne Alberts, Artist

Sue is returning to the bazaar for a second year. She has spent her life raising her family, pursuing her career in nursing, and dabbling in artistic interests.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986, Sue honed her artistic talents, using watercolors to replace physical activities.

She painted while her husband Phil walked; they were "alone together" in the scenic byways of Oregon.

Never one to give up, Sue says, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." One door closed and she made sure she opened another door.

Quite a few of our artists come to us from the medical community. That could be because my sister, Billi, and my original co-host, Carol, have been relentless in pursuing their friends to be vendors, or it could be that art is a great release for stressful jobs. Either way, I'm impressed.

Jean Furchner, Seamstress

Jean has been with us since 2008, madly sewing to keep up with demand.  Her reversible table runners are so popular. One side reflects fall colors and the other side is perfect for moving into the Christmas or Hannakah season. But she has other themes also.

Her placemats are also very popular - beautiful, fun, washable and durable.

These are placemat sets, stacked because there are so many to choose from. Some sets are appropriate for holidays; some are perfect for the beach; some are elegant; and some are great for kids.

If you look carefully, you can see the lovely materials Jean uses. I'll bet she can spend hours in a quilt shop!!

So we look forward to seeing you at the bazaar in Seaside, Oregon, October 24 and 25, 2014.

Vicki Moser, Photographer and Artist

This is Vicki's second year with us. She is a graphic designer in Portland, Oregon, by day and a photographer and artist during off hours. Vicki always has a camera in hand.

She manipulates some of the photos into mandala-like images on her computer. The patterns that emerge surprise even her, reminding her of a kaleidoscope.

Look carefully at the pendants above and you can see Vicki is not only a creative photographer; she is a wizard on the computer.

Vicki also creates encaustics, a hot wax process applied to photographs or paintings that results in beautiful pieces of wall art. You can find more on her website at www.vickimoser.com

We look forward to seeing you at our Seaview Manor Bazaar

This Year's Ad Poster

Well, I promised to show you this year's poster commissioned from Bree Lichnovsky, our vendor from Ilwaco, WA, right on the coast.

The longer I look at the painting, the more detail I see. I love the coastal theme. Her artwork is delightfully whimsical with the imps and a unique font that Bree designed. You will be seeing posters and postcards along the coast in shops, restaurants and hotels.

We are once again giving all our profits to the Clatsop County Women's Resource Center (now called The Harbor to include all the men, women and children they help.)

We're just steps from the beach, so combine a walk on the beach with a visit to our bazaar. Just remember to bring your wallet. Send an e-mail to fernaldlk@gmail.com for more information.

Val and Sue Munoz, Glass Artists

Sue and Val Munoz, from Long Beach, WA, are returning to the bazaar for the fourth year.  We are always excited to see what they are working on now.

Val is the expert at making wonderful trays out of recycled bottles.  He painstakingly removes the labels, collapses the bottles in a kiln, then ver-r-y carefully adheres the labels right back where they were.  The process is quite amazing!

These trays make the perfect gift for someone with a particular favorite beverage.

Sue is the expert at creating beautiful glassware like this plate.

Most recently they are making lamps, hanging and standing, in a variety of gorgeous colors

These creations fly out the door, so claim yours early so as not to miss out!

Zimbabwe Artists Project (ZAP)

We at Seaview Manor Bazaar are honored to support Zimbabwe Artists Project (ZAP), a non-profit organization that works with women (and a few men) from rural Weya in Eastern Zimbabwe, to create beautiful art reminiscent of their lives...

and life in Zimbabwe.

ZAP partners with Weya artists to strengthen self-sufficiency, build cultural understanding and create educational opportunities. They do this by purchasing art directly from Weya artists, then reselling the art in the United States in art exhibits, art sales like Seaview Manor, and online on their website. Sales help provide food, clothing, school fees, medicines, transport, seeds, fertilizer and much more.

In addition to selling artwork, ZAP provides healthcare assistance for all of the artists, as well as school fees for children in the Weya area who have been orphaned.

Products include board paintings, embroideries, fabric paintings, appliques, calendars and greeting cards. For those collectors who wish to display meaningful art, you can't find a more beautiful addition to your home!

For more information go to zimbabweartistsproject.org.

Trish Hanson, Laser Artist

We are so pleased that Trish Hanson is returning to the Seaview Manor Bazaar to be held in Seaside, OR, October 24 and 25, 2014.

Trish makes the most beautiful laser art!  She creates a variety of innovative works...

including sculptures,

inspirational icons,

whimsical art,

and religious motivators.

You're definitely going to want to go home with one of these treasures!

Hayley Espelund, Potter

This will be Hayley's fifth year with the Seaview Manor Bazaar, and we love having her with us! With all her interests in surfing, running, biking, Jiu Jitsu and just about anything else outdoors, it's a wonder she has time to make pottery, but make it she does.

I love the depth of color she uses.

About 6 years ago I had set out to find "beachy" ornaments to hang on our beach house tree and couldn't find anything I liked.  But I didn't know Hayley yet!  Now I have exactly what I was looking for.

Those of us who work the bazaar shop off and on the entire weekend and have quite a pile by the time the bazaar is over. Then we have to pay up! (But I do love these mugs.)

Hayley has an Etsy site and does commissioned work also, so check her out, or buy her items at the bazaar and support The Harbor (formerly called the Clatsop County Women's Resource Center.)

Denise White, Frame Artist

Denise White has been a faithful vendor since the beginning, 2007. She has been an oncology nurse in Portland for 34 years, so how she finds time to pursue her interest in crafts is beyond me.  But she says crafting and gardening are what keep her sane!

Although she has provided a variety of fine crafts for the bazaar, she has most recently settled into making her very popular frames.

The frames are embellished with shells, glass, vintage  buttons, freshwater pearls and rhinestones.

What a perfect accompaniment for that treasured beach photo - an unforgettable gift or personal remembrance. Denise will have many frames to choose from at the Seaview Manor Bazaar held in Seaside, OR, October 24 and 25, 2014, 10 AM - 4 PM.

Friday, August 29, 2014

Billi Odegaard, Stitchery Artist

My sister, Billi Odegaard, is spending some well-deserved rest time after 30 years in public health becoming expert at doing hardanger, a form of old Norwegian embroidery using counted and drawn thread techniques.

Those little holes you see with the black showing through have been created by cutting one thread at a time! A piece as large as the one above takes many hours (like 80 or more) to create and deserves a place of honor in a home.

But Billi is making reasonably priced bookmarks with the same technique so that you can have one of these precious needlework pieces to treasure.

Billi will also have available the macadamia nut shortbread cookies that are such favorites. Most customers load up while at the bazaar since the cookies freeze so well.

How lucky can I be that my sister is so supportive of my endeavors with the bazaar?  Come see us at 135 12th Avenue, Seaside, OR, October 24 and 25, 2014.

Carolyn Anderson, Beadwork Artist

I don't know what I would do without Carolyn Anderson from Aberdeen, Washington. She's not only an artist, but acts as co-chair, keeps our finances straight, offers great advice and brings wine! Carolyn has traveled extensively through Europe and the Far East, which has influenced her many creations.

She uses beads and crystals to make sun catchers...

cell phone fobs...

and decorations for holiday trees, wine bottles, etc.

Carolyn shows beaded and crystal jewelry at the Full Moon Art Gallery in Gig Harbor, WA.  She also has a website at http://www.fullmoonartgallery.com. She donates all profits to Relay for Life of Gray's Harbor, WA.

You will see many of her creations at the Seaview Manor Bazaar in Seaside, OR, October 24 and 25, 2014. Watch for this year's poster with info on what, where and when.

Nanaimo Bars

These bars aren't for dieters, but they may be worth the calories! The recipe, which originated in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, Canada, was kept secret for many years. Nancy, a most faithful Seaview Manor Bazaar vendor, has graciously agreed to share it with followers of this blog.

BOTTOM LAYER
1⁄2 cup unsalted butter
 1⁄4 cup granulated sugar
1⁄4 cup + 1 tablespoon baking cocoa
1 beaten egg
1 3⁄4 cup graham cracker crumbs
1⁄2 cup finely chopped almonds
1 cup coconut

Melt first 3 ingredients in double boiler. Add egg and stir just long enough to cook and
thicken. Remove from heat and stir into crumbs, nuts and coconut. Press firmly into
ungreased 8x8-inch pan. Chill while you complete the next two steps.

TOP LAYER (let cool while making middle layer)
4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Melt 2 ingredients over low heat. Cool until it’s lukewarm and thick, but still liquid.

MIDDLE LAYER
1⁄2 cup unsalted butter
 2 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons cream
2 tablespoons custard powder*
2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Cream 4 ingredients together well. Beat until soft and light. Spread evenly over bottom
layer. Spread chocolate-butter mixture evenly over top.
Refrigerate. But they taste best if you “thaw” them for at least 10 minutes before serving.

*The recipe actually calls for Bird’s Custard Powder, a non-egg mix imported from the
U.K. and now on most grocery store shelves – either in the instant pudding section or
imported section. Friends have used Jello or other pudding mixes as a substitute and been

satisfied with the outcome.
